Meet Harry Santiago
In 1976 I was attending the College of Aeronautics. I lived in the projects at a time when money was scarce. I needed a job to pay for my college education. I held several jobs including shoe shining for a short time and A+P food market stock person. However, none of these jobs were interesting or challenging enough.
Then, I landed a job at a hardware store called Kaminstiens. It was the perfect match for me and I dove into the work becoming very skilled rapidly. In the rear of the store, there was an old automatic key machine and grinder. There was a little repair table where keys and locks were repaired. The store also sold fire proof gates and installed them for a fee. Over the next few months, I learn a great deal and became proficient in the locksmith trade.
My first lock installation took me about 3 hours. It was a simple Segal lock, and I still remember that day. I must have gone back to the store for advice a million times. I told the customer that the door was not lining up and probably many other excuses to buy me time. But, I was determined to make it work regardless of how long I needed to be there. At the end the customer was happy with the work and so was I. It was then that I knew this was the work I wanted to do. Funny enough, the same customer came to our store a year later. I asked if the lock was still working and she replied that the lock was working just fine.
As the years went by, I learn how to install all types of locks, door closers, gates and all kinds of security devices. I left to better myself and I enrolled in a professional locksmith trade school. While there, I learned a great deal of new techniques and the different products we can offer. I am continuing my education to ensure I’m able to keep up with new advances and help customers with a variety of needs.
